on the freeway below. you can see the flashing lights and the berkeley fire department is on the scene. again it's not causing a big traffic jam. let's move along and take a look at web highway 4. that traffic looks good. now let's go back to the desk. thank you, sal. an east bay community is in mourning following the death of two teenage boys. ktvu allie rasmus joins us with we tails of a rafting trip that ended in tragedy. >> reporter: right now we are on treat boulevard and walnut creek. this is where the rafting trip began. we can't really see it very clearly from where we are because it's dark outside and there is a lot of foilage covering the creek. authorities say the two teens started their rafting trip a mile upstream. they entered the water at the creek near murwood elementary

school. at that site there were flowers left behind in memory of 16- year-old matthew miller and 17- year-old gavin powell. now they set out on saturday afternoon in what authorities say was a two person inflatable raft. sheriffs deputies say they were wearing helmets but not life preservers. by midnight on sunday the boys parents reported them missing. early sunday morning is when search crews fanned out along the trail. their bodies were discovered later that afternoon in concord. authorities also found the deflated raft the teens had been using. there is no school this morning. there won't be anyone at the school to tell us about these two teenagers. we have been told an autopsy is expected to be performed on the two teens.

reporting live in walnut creek i'm allie rasmus. we are following developing news out of libya this morning. counterpromotes tours are making their voices heard as well. video from you tube shows progovernment supporters demonstrating today. waves of people can be seen waving machete, clubs, and posters. forces loyal are accused of killing 200 people in the ongoing violence. similar unrest continues to grow in other parts of the middle east. in bahrain hundreds of protestors continue to camp out. those protestors are calling for bahrain's royal family to make changes or step aside. antigovernment protestors risking their lives in iran are getting support here.

more than 150 gathered in san francisco's union square yesterday to do what they say is not allowed in iran protest. calling for basic human rights for the people of iran. >> we are trying to get messages to iranian people they are not alone. >> away want them freedom to speak, freedom of assembly, freedom to voice their opinions and pick their own government. >> opposition websites have reported that security forces used tear gas and live ammunition to drive people from the streets of iran. this morning rescue teams will continue the search for a missing southern california hiker. dr. brian parked his car at the transition on saturday. intending to hike to the peak. he last used his cell phone at noon on saturday. that is about the time a

snowstorm hit that mountain. family members say he is an experienced hiker and was carrying a day pack with food, water, and extra clothing. the search for a missing snow border on mount shasta lead to the discovery of his body. 23-year-old alex gadro of redding last called his family on thursday and told them he was going to take one more run down the mountain. the area had avalanche conditions and two feet of fresh snow. in the midwest, a winter storm is causing trouble on the roads and at the airports. people in minnesota michigan, and wisconsin face a tough commute if they are working on this president's day. minneapolis could see 10-15 inches of snow by this afternoon. hundreds of flights are canceled at minneapolis st. paul, detroit, and chicago. if you are catching a flight, you are urged to check ahead

with your carrier. in wisconsin some schools are open for this president's day holiday and teacher there is are being told to return to the classroom after skipping work to join protests. massive demonstrations have been taking place against a measure that would take away collective bargaining rights by unions. schools were forced to shut down last week after teachers called in sick. now the heads of wisconsins teachers union says it's time for the educators to go back to school. the states governor said he is willing to wait out property test. >> we are willing to take this as long as it takes. >> 14 democratic lawmakers remain in hiding in nearby illinois as they try to avoid a vote on the measure. another midwestern state is expected to see similar patrol test today. indiana in will consider a bill

to strip the right to negotiate bills. opponents say they will have to work harder for less money and fewer benefits. pg&e violated regulations when they increased pressure on the pipeline that exploded in san brew knee. pg&e has admitted spiking the pipeline in 2003 and 2008. the utility tells the newspaper the pressure increases were both safe and legal. today is the final push at 14 car dealerships helping the mount diablo school district raise money. they will donate a portion to keep school music and athletic programs alive. they eliminated funding two years ago. it will take more than a

they are very, very close. very, very close. 30s for temperatures right now. 140 that is at hayward. i'm sure a couple steps away it's colder than that. right along the coast more of a likelihood of any rain if you go east. if you go east you might pick up a little bit of sunshine. the system will spin itself through. tomorrow most of the week looks okay after we get through past today. right there off of eureka it has to go by. clouds and cooler and rain. highs in the 50s for everybody today. and again just every low that comes by seems to be producing rain. cloudy skies, light rain, and temperatures in the low top mid 50s. maybe a little cooler in some of the higher elevations. tuesday, wednesday, and most of thursday looks good. a complex pattern looks to be setting up. >> all right we will be

good morning, a weak system a little low dropping down the coast. it will spin a lot of clouds and light rain. better opportunities near the coast farther inland you go. highs only in the 50s. u.s. navy warship and helicopter are trailing a boat believed to be hijacked by simial lee pirates. pirates boarded the yacht off the coast of omon on friday after the boaters split off from a sailing group. the vessel is reported to be moving closer to the say mallly coast. in mexico, violence is

increasing against people in taxis. at least 12 drivers and passengers were killed over the weekend. the city has been the scene of violent turf wars between drug car tells. taxi drivers have been targeted for extortion of recruited by gangs to act as lookouts or transport drugs. four people have been arrested in connection with some of the attacks. a sacramento news crew is recovering after being attacked by angry mourners while reporting a fatal shooting. reporter john and rebecca little approached friends and family members to see if anyone wanted to talk about what happened. little was pulled to the ground and kicked. he tried to hold off the crowd and was hit in the face. police are reviewing this foot an age video from several other

news stations that witnessed the attack. no arrests have been made. this morning a new engine is being put on a delta airplane. it took off heading for minneapolis but returned to the airport minutes later. >> a minute after takeoff we heard this loud popping and i thought it was the landing gear at first. the plane started shaking a little bit. and then we stopped climbing. so i knew something was wrong. >> investigators say sand blades from the jet engine shot out the back and pieces of the blades were found on the ground but the investigation continues into what caused that engine fill-- failure. the university of arizona will announce the creation of a special political discussion center in response to last months mass shooting in tucson.

it's called the national institute for civil discourse. six people were killed. 13 others hurt in that january 8th shooting at the tucson safeway. former president bill clinton and senior george bush will serve as the honorary chairman. there appears to be a positive side effect to a horrifying act of violence in richmond one year ago. it happened on valentines day 2010. three gunmen opened fire in the church injuring two brothers. that attack shocked the richmond community and produced a new commitment to end the violence. >> it has been a tremendous difference. the people that found out that god is real. >> it ought brought a lot of -- it brought a lot of people together. it encouraged relationships

with the police department and the community. we are all working together to get this crime problem solved. >> there are statistics to support that opposition. richmond police report a dramatic drop in homicide since that church attack one year ago. a group of stanford students are going to prison. they are part of a university lead workshop that lets them gain insiders knowledge of the prison. they almost work with a group of 20 inmates. the inmates have all received associate degrees through the prison university project. they will hold sessions on sunday afternoons in a classroom at the prison. santa clara city leaders want to make sure funds slated for a new 49ers football stadium don't disappear. the city council plans to meet tomorrow to look at ways to insure that the $40 million promised for the project is not cut from the state budget. governor brown has said he wants to do away with redevelop

agencies and funnel that money to education and local governments. we heard that facebook is partly responsible for spreading the word of egypt's resolution. now we are told there is one egyptian especially inspired by the social networking sites role in his countries change. plus a bay area man is about to set off on an epic cross country journey. the reason he plans to run almost 3,000 miles.

found 150 live roosters and 16 dead ones. deputies say people were seen running from scene. seven people were sited as spectators. the homeowner was also sited. the crew of the discovery is ready for the shuttles final launch after it was postponed 3.5 months. >> the team did a great job coming together figuring out a great engineering problem and coming up with a solution. >> there was a crack in the shuttles external tank. it has been modified to make breakage less likely. five men and one woman are scheduled to leave thursday for the international space station. an alaskan state lawmaker is returning home by sea after refusing to under go a pat down at a seattle airport. represent -- she says the tsa called for the pat down because

the scan showed she had a misnet me. she will now take a fairy home from seattle. a marin county man is on a mission to raise awareness for childhood obesity. he plans to run across country from southern california to new york city along the way he hopes to inspire kids to get active. his goal is to cover 50 miles every day for 75 days straight. karnazes has run 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days but says this could be the toughest challenge yet. >> i'm very excited but also very, very nervous. the stakes are high and as far as the physical endeavor before me it's daunting. i'm just going to take it one day at a time. >> listen to this. he says he will burn at least 7,000-calories a day. he starts his run friday. you can track him online.

nicely. it is a holiday so we'll have lighter than usual conditions. easy on the accelerator. police are out there. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. cold and clouds increasing. light rain may exist but mainly on the coast. farther west better opportunity. farther east less of an opportunity for rain. we will all get the clouds. this is shaping up to be a very, very interesting week once we get to thursday and friday. right now you can see on live storm tracker two that's where the bulk of this system will produce. there could still be a stray shower or two some light rain. we'll mention it. 30s for everybody here. if it wasn't for the cloud cover, we would continue to drop. system impose right down the coast. that means by tuesday and wednesday things look good.
